About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and experienced freelance bookkeeper to join our team and help us serve our nonprofit & mission-driven clients. This role focuses on higher-level bookkeeping tasks, including setting up chart of accounts, onboarding new clients, and cleaning up books for both new and existing clients. Duties
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, and Quicken
- Perform bank reconciliations, account reconciliations, and general ledger accounting to ensure data integrity
- Prepare and process journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll transactions
- Conduct balance sheet reconciliation and general ledger reconciliation regularly to verify account accuracy
- Set up chart of accounts and establish bookkeeping mapping for new client onboarding
- Review, reconcile, and clean up books for new and existing clients to ensure accuracy and organization
- Apply GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) standards in all financial activities and ensure compliance with relevant regulations
- Assist with various bookkeeping tasks as needed to maintain accurate financial records
- Provide regular updates and respond promptly through our internal chat/task management system
Experience
- Proven experience in bookkeeping or accounting roles, preferably within the nonprofit, church, or mission - driven sector.
- Strong proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, Quicken, and other financial tools
- Self-starter who can work independently in a remote environment
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Reliable internet connection and home office setup
Education
- Minimum: High School Diploma or GED.
- Preferred: Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration or Higher
- Preferred Certifications (one of the following): Certified Bookkeeper (CB) - AIPB; Certified Public Bookkeeper (CPB) - NACPB; QuickBooks ProAdvisor
Ideal Candidate
You're an experienced bookkeeper—preferably with nonprofit bookkeeping experience—who takes ownership of your work, proactively identifies issues, and communicates clearly. You thrive working independently and enjoy bringing order to messy books.
