New, burgeoning, fledgling and embryonic publication SMATTER Magazine is looking for writers! Seeking nonfiction pieces of either 300-500 words or 1000 words. We are hoping, too, to build a continuing relationship with said writers, who over a span of months or even years might continue to contribute to our pages.
This role is freelance and comes with pay.
Expansive in our taste and worldview, we are a general interest publication founded in New York City in 2025. Journalism, essays, analytical pieces, human interest stories, criticism and humorous adventures are all in our wheelhouse. Culture, politics, business, food, history, science, religion, tech and more are all areas we would entertain covering.
For now, we are a humble website (https://www.smattermag.com/), but in the coming months we will be introducing our print element—a 16-page booklet—that will be distributed quarterly at choice locations around the City of New York.
Check out our website to get an idea of our editorial tone, which we consider to be one of intelligent irreverence.
If you think you might be a good fit, please send a few clips and story pitch(es) to editor@smattermagazine.com. If you don’t have any published clips, please send an unpublished writing sample just to ensure you are a good fit for our editorial voice.
We are a start-up publication. Our rates start at $.10 a word.
(We try to steer clear personal essays unless they are very funny or elicit a greater truth about last 20,000 years of human endeavor.)
Role remote. Company based in New York.
