Location: Remote, with preference for candidates based in Florida or the DC corridor Engagement: Freelance, project based with potential for ongoing retainer
About the Opportunity:
A nationally active company and affiliated nonprofit foundation are seeking a sharp, well connected freelance journalist to expand earned media presence. Our work sits at the intersection of technology, public policy, philanthropy, and civic affairs, and we are ready to invest in a writer who can move stories from idea to print.
The Role:
We are looking for someone who can write compelling articles and, more importantly, get them placed in credible media outlets. This is not a content marketing role. We want someone who understands how newsrooms operate, who knows editors by first name, and who can pitch a story that lands on the page rather than in a spam folder.
What You Will Do:
- Research, write, and pitch articles tied to our business interests, philanthropic work, and leadership.
- Place written work in national, regional, and trade publications, including print, digital, and broadcast affiliated outlets.
- Develop angles that turn corporate news, policy positions, and philanthropic initiatives into stories editors actually want to publish.
- Build and maintain relationships with reporters, columnists, editors, and producers.
- Respond to negative coverage with substantive counter narratives when needed.
- Coordinate with the internal team on timing, messaging, and embargoes.
What We Are Looking For:
- Proven track record of bylined work in recognized publications, or a track record of ghost placing pieces under client names.
- A working rolodex of global editors and reporters across business, technology, policy, and lifestyle verticals.
- Strategic instincts. You know which outlet wants which angle, when to lead with data, when to lead with a person, and how to make a pitch impossible to ignore.
- Excellent writing skills, with the ability to write in someone else’s voice when needed.
- Discretion. Much of this work is sensitive and requires confidentiality.
- Willingness to operate on tight deadlines.
Bonus Points:
- Florida political and business reporting experience.
- Background covering telecommunications, broadband policy, nonprofit philanthropy, or emerging tech.
- Existing relationships with Politico, Florida Politics, the Tampa Bay Times, Miami Herald, Orlando Sentinel, Forbes, Bloomberg, Black Enterprise, or similar outlets.
Compensation:
Competitive per project rates, with bonuses tied to successful placements in target tier outlets. Retainer available for the right candidate.
