The Gratiot County Herald is accepting applications for managing editor.
This position oversees news coverage, freelance coordination, editing and page production for a weekly newspaper with a Tuesday deadline.
The editor is responsible for finding and developing local stories by monitoring government boards, schools, public agencies, community organizations and social media.
Work includes reviewing public records, contacting sources, covering meetings and writing roughly six to seven articles each week.
Freelance coordination includes assigning stories, providing direction, answering questions, tracking follow-through and reviewing submitted copy from writers with varying levels of experience and availability.
Editing requires strong attention to accuracy, structure, clarity and grammar.
Page production includes paginating five to seven news pages each week, reviewing other sections before press, formatting articles and photos in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, and writing headlines, cutlines and other display copy.
Strong writing and editing skills, sound news judgment, deadline discipline and the ability to work independently are required.
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in journalism or prior community newspaper experience.
