Overview
System One is hiring a Mechanical Designer. In this role, you will create structural and mechanical design solutions for test-related designs (e.g. test fixtures, test rigs, flow loops, sub-scale test articles, etc.), 3D CAD models, and engineering drawings for the conceptual and preliminary design development of advanced Generation IV nuclear reactors. Candidates must have extensive experience in mechanical/structural design and drafting using a mainstream CAD system.
Responsibilities
- Create structural and mechanical design solutions for test-related designs (e.g., test fixtures, test rigs, flow loops, sub-scale test articles).
- Develop 3D CAD models and engineering drawings for advanced Generation IV nuclear reactors in accordance with industry standards.
- Produce robust CAD models utilizing advanced modeling techniques to facilitate rapid design evolution and derivative creation.
- Develop and maintain highly complex mechanical designs, conducting trade studies to identify optimal solutions.
- Support analysis needs by configuring models for structural, neutronics, thermal-hydraulic, radiological, and safety considerations.
- Document design progress, changes, and decisions in online collaboration platforms.
- Create technical presentations, reports, and supporting documents as needed.
- Design engineering drawings per ASME standards, perform tolerance stack-up calculations, and review drawings for accuracy.
- Maintain configuration control of models and drawings using product data management software.
- Proactively contribute to standards development and propose improvements to design documentation.
Requirements
- B.S. degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent with 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently on multiple tasks.
- Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Experience checking fabrication drawings and in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
- Background in Mechanical and Machine Design, preferably with over seven years of CAD proficiency.
- Familiarity with product data management (PDM) systems.
- Experience working in quality standards like ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001 preferred.
- Nuclear design experience and oversight of supplier and subcontractor organizations highly desirable.
- Experience with complex mechanical components testing, especially in high-temperature environments.
- Knowledge of nuclear quality fabrication, lifecycle management, and related processes (e.g., In-Service Inspection, material surveillance, vibration programs).
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work with diverse, geographically dispersed teams.
