Role Description The Gear Writer is a full-time, on-site role based in Dana Point, CA. This role focuses on researching, testing, and reviewing surf, outdoor, and adventure gear, then translating those insights into clear, engaging written content. Day-to-day responsibilities include developing article ideas, writing and editing gear guides and product reviews, collaborating with editors and other team members on content planning, and aligning stories with The Inertia’s brand voice and audience interests. The Gear Writer will also stay up to date on industry trends, attend relevant brand and product events when needed, and help optimize content for digital platforms.
Qualifications
- Strong writing and editing skills for digital media, including experience crafting clear, concise, and engaging gear reviews and guides.
- Ability to conduct thorough product and market research, compare technical features, and translate complex information into accessible language.
- Familiarity with surf, outdoor, and adventure gear, with a genuine interest in testing products and understanding user needs.
- Basic understanding of content strategy and digital publishing best practices, including SEO-aware writing and audience-focused storytelling.
- Excellent organizational skills, reliability in meeting deadlines, and comfort working in a fast-paced editorial environment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with editors, filmmakers, and marketing partners.
- Experience with content management systems and standard productivity tools; familiarity with analytics tools is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Outdoor Recreation, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- On-site availability in Dana Point, CA, and willingness to participate in field testing, events, and brand activations as needed.
