Responsibilities
- Deliver precise interpretation services in American Sign Language (ASL) for a wide range of clients and settings, including educational institutions, healthcare facilities, legal environments, and community events.
- Perform simultaneous interpretation during live conversations or presentations to facilitate real-time understanding between ASL users and English speakers.
- Conduct consecutive interpretation by listening carefully, then conveying the message accurately after pauses or at designated intervals.
- Provide over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) services to support remote communication needs across different languages and contexts.
- Demonstrate cultural competency by understanding and respecting diverse backgrounds, ensuring interpretations are sensitive and appropriate.
- Maintain professional ethics by upholding confidentiality, impartiality, and neutrality in all assignments.
- Collaborate with clients to understand specific interpretation requirements and adapt your approach accordingly.
Experience
- Proven proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with certification from a recognized interpreting organization preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in interpretation across multiple settings such as educational, medical, legal, or community environments.
- Strong command of English language skills, including advanced vocabulary and comprehension abilities.
- Experience with multilingual interpretation services, including foreign language proficiency and translation skills.
- Familiarity with interpretation techniques such as simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, as well as over-the-phone interpretation (OPI).
- Knowledge of professional ethics standards for interpreters and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
- Excellent communication skills combined with cultural awareness to effectively serve diverse populations.
