Background
The $13+ billion Climate Investment Funds (CIF) invests in developing countries to drive sustainable, resilient growth through catalytic climate finance. Since 2008, CIF has partnered with governments and multilateral development banks to accelerate investment in energy systems transformation, resilience, nature-based solutions, and industrial decarbonization, creating pathways for other investors to follow. Through grants and concessional loans, CIF enables more than 80 countries to mobilize capital, with over $10 in expected co-financing for every CIF dollar on average. In 2025, CIF became the first multilateral climate fund to raise new private finance from capital markets through the CIF Capital Markets Mechanism (CCMM).
The CIF Secretariat, hosted by the World Bank, supports CIF’s governing bodies across strategy, policy development, and results reporting. It manages institutional relations and strategic partnerships, supports program development, delivers a substantial body of thought leadership and knowledge work, and is responsible for portfolio risk management and new private sector capital mobilization initiatives.
