Job Summary
Nelson Media Company is seeking an experienced, fully remote part-time Newspaper Writer/Reporter to contribute high-quality reporting across our portfolio of eight locally owned community newspapers throughout the Midwest.
This role is ideal for someone who truly loves the newspaper business—the craft of reporting, the responsibility of accurate storytelling, and the importance of local journalism in small and mid-sized communities. You will help cover local news, government, and feature stories, working closely with editors and local contacts to deliver meaningful, well-reported journalism.
This is a paid, part-time, fully remote position. Prior newspaper or professional journalism experience is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Report and write stories focused on local and regional news
- Cover city councils, county boards, and public meetings
- Report on government, civic, and institutional topics
- Develop human-interest and feature stories
- Conduct interviews via phone, email, Zoom, and in coordination with local sources
- Write clear, accurate, and engaging articles following AP style
- Collaborate with editors to revise, polish, and finalize stories for print and digital publication
- Manage assignments across multiple newspapers while meeting weekly deadlines
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, fairness, and ethical journalism
- Communicate clearly and consistently with editors and team members
Required Qualifications
- Previous newspaper or professional journalism experience
- Strong command of written communication and AP style
- Excellent organization and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment
- Strong interviewing skills and professional communication
- Comfort covering government and public meetings
- Reliable computer, internet access, and proficiency with email and word processing tools
