Mentor A Promise is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth (ages 5–18) experiencing housing instability, grounded in the belief that every child is a Promise—full of potential, dignity, and possibility. We deliver consistent, high-quality programming across mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression in shelters, schools, and community spaces, creating structured environments where students can grow, be seen, and build lasting skills. Through signature experiences like The Imagination Studio, The Kitchen Table, The Sound Lab, and The Story Space, we nurture academic development, emotional well-being, and creative voice, all within a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and accessibility-centered framework. Our work prioritizes dignity-protective storytelling, consent-driven engagement, and deep community partnership, ensuring that how we serve is as intentional as whom we serve. We are not only addressing immediate needs - we are building pathways to confidence, belonging, and long-term opportunity, so every child has the support and foundation to carry their promise forward.

About Mentor A Promise
Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, creative expression, career development, advocacy, and community-centered opportunity.
MAP believes creativity can do more than attract attention. It can communicate ideas, create belonging, challenge assumptions, celebrate identity, and invite people into something meaningful.
About PromiseBrands
PromiseBrands is MAP's brand, fashion, design, product, and creative-expression division.
Through fashion, apparel, visual identity, products, campaigns, and creative collaborations, PromiseBrands explores how design can carry meaning while remaining culturally relevant, visually compelling, and connected to MAP's mission.
We are interested in fashion not simply as something people wear, but as something people use to communicate who they are.
Role Overview
Mentor A Promise is seeking a curious, culturally aware, and distinctive Fashion Writer for a Cause to help develop the editorial voice surrounding MAP's fashion, design, and social-impact work.
This role sits at the intersection of fashion journalism, cultural writing, storytelling, design, and purpose.
The writer may develop articles, essays, interviews, designer profiles, collection stories, trend commentary, campaign narratives, and editorial features exploring fashion through a social-impact lens.
We are not looking for someone to simply write promotional copy about clothing.
We are looking for someone interested in what clothing can say.
Fashion Editorial
Develop thoughtful original writing exploring subjects such as
- Fashion and culture
- Fashion and identity
- Youth style and self-expression
- Streetwear
- Design
- Textiles and craftsmanship
- Fashion history
- Emerging designers
- Creative entrepreneurship
- Sustainable fashion
- Accessibility and adaptive fashion
- Representation
- Fashion careers
- Ethical production
- Art and fashion
- Fashion and community
- Clothing as storytelling
- Social-impact design
Bring curiosity and perspective to each assignment rather than simply summarizing a topic.
Fashion for a Cause
Explore how fashion can engage with meaningful social questions without reducing those issues to slogans.
Potential stories may examine
Fashion × Identity
Fashion × Belonging
Fashion × Youth
Fashion × Accessibility
Fashion × Community
Fashion × Creativity
Fashion × Opportunity
Fashion × Social Impact
Cause-driven fashion should still be good fashion.
A meaningful message does not excuse weak creative work, and beautiful design does not excuse shallow storytelling.
The strongest work should respect both.
Editorial Storytelling
Develop compelling stories around PromiseBrands projects, collections, collaborations, designers, and creative concepts.
Help audiences understand
Where did the idea come from?
Why was it created?
Who contributed?
What influenced the design?
What does the work communicate?
What larger conversation does it belong to?
The goal is not simply to describe the finished product.
It is to uncover the story behind it.
Designer & Creative Profiles
Interview and profile designers, artists, photographers, stylists, creative professionals, and collaborators.
Develop thoughtful questions that move beyond résumés and promotional talking points.
Explore creative process, influences, failures, experimentation, identity, craft, career journeys, and the thinking behind the work.
Good interviews do not simply record answers.
They create space for interesting ones.
Youth & Fashion
Help MAP explore fashion as a potential avenue for youth creativity, career exploration, and self-expression.
Content may introduce young people to careers including
- Fashion design
- Fashion journalism
- Styling
- Photography
- Textile design
- Merchandising
- Creative direction
- Fashion marketing
- Product development
- E-commerce
- Costume design
- Production
- Fashion technology
- Entrepreneurship
Young people should encounter fashion not only as consumers.
They should be able to imagine themselves as creators.
Campaign & Collection Stories
Collaborate with PromiseBrands creative teams to develop editorial narratives around collections, products, campaigns, and collaborations.
Support
Concept → Story → Design → Creative Development → Editorial Narrative → Campaign → Audience
Help ensure the words surrounding a collection strengthen the creative idea rather than merely explain what the audience can already see.
Research
Conduct responsible research to strengthen fashion and cultural writing.
Verify names, dates, historical references, statistics, quotations, and other factual claims before publication.
Distinguish reporting from commentary and interpretation.
Fashion writing can be creative without becoming careless with facts.
Dignity-Centered Storytelling
Follow MAP's standards for dignity-centered and trauma-informed storytelling.
Housing instability should never become an aesthetic.
A young person's hardship should never become creative material simply because it makes a campaign more emotionally powerful.
When writing about young people, families, or communities, approach their experiences with context, respect, privacy, and appropriate consent.
The cause should never consume the person.
Editorial Voice
Help develop a recognizable fashion editorial voice for PromiseBrands.
Writing should be
- Intelligent
- Accessible
- Curious
- Contemporary
- Human
- Culturally aware
- Visually imaginative
- Thoughtful
- Mission-conscious without becoming promotional
We want readers to continue reading because the writing itself is worth reading.
Cross-Creative Collaboration
Work across MAP's creative ecosystem.
Collaborate with PromiseBrands on fashion and brand expression.
Collaborate with PromiseStudios on photography, film, animation, and visual storytelling.
Collaborate with PromiseVoice on communications and audience distribution.
Collaborate with PromisePages where fashion intersects with literary and long-form storytelling.
Strong fashion storytelling rarely belongs to only one medium.
Qualifications
Strong candidates may come from fashion journalism, editorial writing, culture writing, creative writing, journalism, communications, fashion studies, design, media, or related fields.

A strong writer with genuine curiosity about fashion and culture can grow into the role.
What Success Looks Like
PromiseBrands develops a recognizable editorial voice around fashion.
Original stories are published consistently.
Designers and creative professionals are profiled thoughtfully.
Fashion projects have stronger narratives.
Readers encounter perspectives they did not expect.
Young people discover creative careers they may not have previously considered.
Social-impact stories maintain dignity and complexity.
Writing strengthens rather than merely advertises the creative work.
And audiences begin to recognize that MAP has something distinctive to contribute to conversations about fashion, creativity, culture, and purpose.
Why This Role Matters
Fashion is one of the ways people tell stories without speaking.
A jacket can communicate belonging.
A color can carry memory.
A silhouette can challenge convention.
A textile can carry history.
A young person's style can be an early declaration of identity.
Fashion writing gives those choices language.
At MAP, we want that language to do more than sell something.
We want it to make people look again, think differently, discover creators, understand ideas, and recognize that creativity and purpose do not have to live in separate worlds.
What You Will Gain
This role provides hands-on experience in fashion journalism, editorial development, cultural writing, interviewing, brand storytelling, social-impact communications, and multidisciplinary creative collaboration.
Writers will have opportunities to develop published work, expand their portfolios, collaborate with designers and creative professionals, propose original editorial concepts, and help shape an emerging fashion and cultural voice within PromiseBrands.
Volunteer Commitment
This is an unpaid volunteer creative role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week with a minimum six-month commitment.
Consistent communication, participation in editorial planning, collaboration with creative teams, and reliable follow-through are expected.
Volunteers should provide at least two weeks' notice when ending their service whenever possible.
How To Apply
Please apply through Idealist only and submit
- A current résumé
- A cover letter explaining your interest in Mentor A Promise, fashion, and social-impact storytelling
- Two to three writing samples or a portfolio demonstrating relevant editorial, fashion, culture, journalism, or creative writing
Applications submitted without both a résumé and cover letter may not be considered.
At this time, MAP volunteer opportunities are limited to individuals based in the United States due to legal, safeguarding, data-privacy, compliance, and programmatic requirements.
Acknowledgment of Role
By accepting this position, the volunteer acknowledges that this is an unpaid creative role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week for a minimum of six months, consistent communication, responsible handling of organizational and creative information, respect for intellectual property and editorial standards, and adherence to MAP's confidentiality, safeguarding, dignity-centered storytelling, and youth-protection requirements.
Find the story behind the fabric. Ask what the design is trying to say. Give creators language for ideas that began visually. Write about fashion with curiosity, culture, and purpose—and help build a space where what we wear can become the beginning of a much larger conversation.
