Video Journalist
Location: Los Angeles
Type: Freelance / Contract
About the Brand
We are building an independent media venture focused on documenting life in Los Angeles. The work reports on the people, places, institutions, and systems that shape the city, in short-form documentary video made for social platforms.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Video Journalist to find, research, report, and produce compelling short-form stories about Los Angeles, its neighborhoods, its history, and the civic issues shaping its future.
This role is for someone who understands how people consume stories today — how to find a strong hook, capture attention quickly, build a narrative with momentum, and create work that stands out in a short-form-first media environment. We’re looking for a journalist and storyteller with strong editorial instincts who can translate substantive subjects into accessible, engaging videos without sacrificing depth or credibility.
This is an exciting opportunity to ideate and break your own stories and help define the tone, format, and editorial voice of the brand, with support from our organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Story Development
- Develop and pitch original story ideas about Los Angeles, its neighborhoods, industries, and institutions
- Research subjects, identify and vet sources, and build the reporting foundation for each piece
- Identify the stories that reward attention, including subjects that appear ordinary until they are reported properly
Reporting and Field Production
- Conduct interviews on camera and on background
- Shoot in the field, independently and with production support as needed
- Manage logistics, access, and scheduling
Narrative and Scripting
- Shape narrative structure and write scripts and voiceover
- Translate complex ideas into compelling, authentic storytelling without flattening the underlying facts
- Produce and edit short-form documentary video from assembly through final cut
Editorial Voice
- Help define the tone, format, cadence, and editorial standards of the brand
- Determine how stories should be built differently across platforms and formats
- Contribute to decisions about what this brand covers, and what it does not
What This Role Is Not
- Not branded content, sponsored content, or marketing production
- Not focused on performance marketing, growth, or paid distribution
Experience and Qualifications
- 3-5 years of professional experience in video journalism, documentary filmmaking, editorial content, or a related field
- A portfolio demonstrating thoughtful storytelling, sound editorial judgment, and work that holds an audience on social platforms
- Strong storytelling and editorial instincts, with the ability to make complex or seemingly ordinary subjects worth watching
- Comfort interviewing people and working in the field, often alone
- Deep knowledge of and genuine curiosity about Los Angeles
- Ability to work independently, make decisions quickly, and move a story from idea to finished piece
- Experience shooting and editing your own work is strongly preferred
