Volunteer Grants Strategist (Screening & Pipeline Lead)
Organization: ACHONU Foundation
Location: Remote (U.S.-based)
Time commitment: ~5–7 hrs/week, flexible
Reports to: Executive Director
About ACHONU Foundation
ACHONU Foundation is a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit sponsoring girls' secondary education in Nigeria, built on a "multiplier model" — each sponsored girl becomes a mentor, employer, and advocate for the next generation. Our programming spans four pillars: education access, financial and digital empowerment, reproductive and health education, and leadership and mentorship. We're early-stage and building the systems and funding pipeline to reach our 10-year goal of sponsoring 1,000 girls.
Role Overview
This volunteer will lead grant screening and pipeline development — identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing funding opportunities that fit ACHONU's stage, mission, and international programming. This is a strategy and research-facing role, not a writing role (though this person may occasionally partner with our Volunteer Grant Writer on shaping a proposal's angle).
Responsibilities
Research and screen grant opportunities (foundations, corporate giving programs, donor-advised funds) for fit with ACHONU's mission, budget size, and international/Nigeria-based programming
Maintain and prioritize a live grants pipeline/tracker (deadlines, eligibility notes, funder priorities, likelihood of fit)
Flag disqualifying criteria early (e.g., domestic-only funding, minimum budget thresholds, ineligible entity types) to avoid wasted effort
Brainstorm and help shape program framing/angles that align ACHONU's work with specific funders' priorities
Bring forward 3–5 qualified prospects per month with a brief rationale for each
Partner with the Executive Director on funder relationship strategy and application prioritization
Qualifications
Based in the United States
Experience with international development, global education, or global health funding (grants, philanthropy, or program experience with an international lens)
Familiarity with U.S. foundation and corporate grant landscapes; databases like Candid/Foundation Directory, Instrumentl, or similar a plus
Strong research and organizational skills; comfortable working independently
Genuine interest in girls' education and international development
What You'll Gain
Direct involvement in shaping the funding strategy of an early-stage nonprofit
Visibility into grantmaking from the funder side, in a stage of the org where your judgment shapes the pipeline directly
Flexible, remote, mission-driven volunteer role

Our programming spans four pillars: education access, financial and digital empowerment, reproductive and health education, and leadership and mentorship.
Role Overview
This volunteer will draft and refine grant proposals, concept papers, and letters of inquiry for opportunities identified through our grants pipeline. This is a writing- and editing-focused role, working closely with the Executive Director and our Volunteer Grants Strategist to turn funder priorities into compelling, accurate proposals.
Responsibilities
Draft concept papers, letters of inquiry, and full proposals based on funder guidelines and pipeline priorities
Translate ACHONU's mission, programs, and impact data into clear, funder-ready narrative
Meet funder deadlines, working backward from due dates to leave time for internal review
Incorporate feedback from the Executive Director and Board efficiently
Maintain a boilerplate library (mission statement, program descriptions, org history, outcomes) to speed up future applications
Ensure consistency in tone, facts, and figures across all submitted materials
Qualifications
Prior grant writing experience (nonprofit, education, or international development sector preferred)
Strong, clear writing with attention to funder-specific tailoring — not boilerplate reuse
Comfortable working with tight deadlines and iterative feedback
Detail-oriented; catches inconsistencies in facts, figures, and formatting requirements
Interest in girls' education and international development a plus
What You'll Gain
A portfolio of nonprofit grant writing samples across the international education/development space
Close collaboration with foundation leadership on a growing organization's story and strategy
Flexible, remote, mission-driven volunteer role
