The Staff Writer will create authoritative, engaging, and commercially effective health and wellness content for digital audiences. Working closely with editors, SEO, revenue analysts, medical reviewers, product testers, and external partners, this role will produce comprehensive product reviews, roundups, informational stories, and related materials that help consumers make informed purchasing decisions.
What You'll Be Doing
Reporting to the Director of Content, the Staff Writer will:
Content Development and Writing
- Write in-depth reviews, product comparisons, roundups, informational stories, gift guides, and other commerce-focused health and wellness content.
- Produce long-form, comprehensive product reviews averaging approximately 2,000 words and product roundups that may average 6,000 words.
- Present complex product information in a voice that is knowledgeable, engaging, credible, and easy for consumers to understand.
- Clearly explain product features, benefits, limitations, pricing, customer considerations, testing results, and competitive differentiators.
- Adapt content structure, depth, tone, and format based on the subject matter, audience, publication requirements, and commercial goals.
- Maintain a consistent publishing cadence while balancing multiple assignments, revisions, optimizations, and competing deadlines.
- Contribute to additional editorial formats and special projects based on business, partner, and audience needs.
Research and Subject-Matter Expertise
- Conduct thorough research and vet the credibility of peer-reviewed journals, scholarly publications, authoritative medical sources, manufacturer information, and other credible references.
- Translate medical, scientific, and technical concepts into accessible language without sacrificing accuracy or important context.
- Quickly develop expertise in unfamiliar health, wellness, product, and service categories.
- Monitor relevant category trends, consumer concerns, product developments, market changes, and emerging research.
- Build and maintain subject-matter knowledge across multiple assigned product categories.
- Maintain clear research notes, source documentation, and supporting materials in accordance with editorial standards.
- Work closely with a team of fact checkers to document citations and source materials in accordance with our guidelines and expectations.
- Work closely with a team of medical reviewers to vet drafts and ensure study citations are correct and study results are accurately represented.
Product Testing and Editorial Methodology
- Test health and wellness products directly when appropriate or collaborate with designated product testers to collect firsthand experience.
- Secure detailed testing notes, original images, screenshots, videos, and other rich media that strengthen the usefulness and credibility of content.
- Develop thoughtful questions and testing criteria that produce meaningful insights for consumers.
- Play an active role in designing, refining, and documenting testing methodologies across assigned product categories.
- Ensure testing methods are consistent, relevant to consumer needs, and aligned with editorial standards.
- Translate testing observations into clear, balanced, and appropriately qualified conclusions.
- Collaborate with editors, testers, and subject-matter experts to resolve inconsistencies or incomplete findings.
- Help standardize successful testing practices so they can be applied across future content and product categories.
SEO and Content Performance
- Partner closely with SEO and Revenue teams to plan, create, edit, and optimize content for organic search, commercial performance, and commercial priorities without compromising editorial standards
- Incorporate keyword research, search intent, competitive insights, internal linking, metadata, and other optimization guidance into content.
- Balance SEO requirements with readability, editorial integrity, brand voice, and consumer usefulness.
- Complete updates and content optimizations based on performance trends, search changes, product developments, and business priorities.
- Review existing content to identify opportunities to improve accuracy, relevance, depth, structure, conversion potential, and search visibility.
- Remain informed about evolving SEO practices and digital content expectations.
Stakeholder Relationships and External Partnerships
- Serve as a trusted day-to-day editorial partner to assigned external stakeholders.
- Develop a strong understanding of the external partner's preferred voice, style, audience, content goals, terminology, and brand requirements.
- Write stories and related materials in a manner that reflects the partner's established content preferences while maintaining internal editorial and quality standards.
- Build productive, professional relationships through clear communication, responsiveness, reliability, and thoughtful expectation management.
- Translate partner feedback and business priorities into actionable editorial direction.
- Ask clarifying questions, identify potential misalignment early, and confirm expectations before significant content development begins.
- Manage feedback from multiple internal and external stakeholders while maintaining clarity regarding editorial standards, deadlines, and final deliverables.
- Partner with editors to reconcile differences between partner preferences, audience needs, SEO recommendations, and internal editorial requirements.
- Provide appropriate visibility into content status, open questions, dependencies, and delivery risks.
- Participate in partner meetings, editorial planning discussions, content reviews, and performance conversations as needed.
Medical Review and Editorial Quality
- Cultivate effective working relationships with medical advisory teams and subject-matter experts.
- Accurately incorporate medical-review feedback while preserving clarity, readability, and the intended meaning of the content.
- Distinguish between editorial preferences, factual corrections, medical guidance, and compliance-sensitive feedback.
- Uphold high standards for factual accuracy, balance, transparency, sourcing, and consumer trust.
- Follow AP style, internal editorial guidelines, partner-specific requirements, and established content standards.
- Proofread and self-edit assignments before submission, minimizing preventable errors and unnecessary revision cycles.
- Apply editorial feedback efficiently and carry lessons forward into future assignments.
Editorial Project Management
- Lead assigned editorial projects from initial concept and planning through publication and subsequent optimization.
- Develop realistic work plans and manage personal timelines across multiple concurrent assignments.
- Coordinate effectively with editors, SEO, Revenue, medical reviewers, product testers, designers, and external partners.
- Maintain organized records of briefs, research, testing materials, drafts, feedback, approvals, and final deliverables.
- Identify risks, resource needs, or timeline concerns early and communicate them to appropriate stakeholders.
- Manage revisions efficiently while maintaining quality and meeting agreed-upon timelines.
- Contribute to editorial planning, ideation, workflow improvements, and content-calendar discussions.
- Support less-experienced writers through collaboration, knowledge sharing, peer feedback, or informal guidance when appropriate.
Content Publishing and CMS Management
- Apply appropriate headings, links, tables, images, captions, disclosures, product details, and other formatting elements.
- Ensure published content follows established templates, brand requirements, SEO guidance, and accessibility practices.
- Conduct quality-assurance reviews before and after publication to confirm formatting, links, images, and page elements function correctly.
- Maintain familiarity with WordPress and other commonly used content management platforms.
- Partner with editorial operations, Product, or Engineering stakeholders when publishing needs require technical support.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, marketing, health communication, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.
- Approximately 3–5 years of professional journalism, e-commerce, affiliate, digital publishing, or commerce-content writing experience.
- Strong portfolio of product reviews, roundups, buying guides, blogs, or other long-form digital content.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong working knowledge of AP style.
- Experience writing content informed by SEO strategy and search intent.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct detailed research and translate complex or technical information for a general audience.
- Experience leading editorial assignments or projects from initial planning through publication.
- Experience working with editors, SEO professionals, revenue teams, medical reviewers, subject-matter experts, or external business partners.
- Strong organizational, project-management, and time-management skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, shifting priorities, and overlapping deadlines.
- Experience using common CMS platforms, including WordPress.
- Ability to self-direct work, identify next steps, and maintain momentum with limited oversight.
- Strong critical-thinking skills and attention to detail.
