Freelance Research Writer (Houston-Based)
Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Freelance Research Writer to support the development of thought leadership, industry reports, white papers, executive briefs, and long-form content focused on the energy sector, specifically oil and gas.
The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller with a journalism background who can translate complex topics into clear, engaging, and insightful content for executive and professional audiences.
Experience covering the oil and gas industry is strongly preferred, along with a deep understanding of the energy landscape, market dynamics, and emerging trends impacting the sector.
Responsibilities
- Write high-quality articles, reports, white papers, executive summaries, and thought leadership content.
- Write about industry data, market trends, and secondary research sources to develop compelling narratives.
- Translate technical and industry-specific information into clear, accessible content for diverse audiences.
- Collaborate with external client stakeholders to develop content strategies that align with their key objectives.
- Fact-check content and ensure accuracy, credibility, and adherence to editorial standards.
- Stay informed on developments across the energy, oil and gas, and broader industrial sectors.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional writing, journalism, content development, or research experience.
- Strong portfolio showcasing long-form reporting, research-based writing, or thought leadership content.
- Experience covering the oil and gas, energy, industrial, or related sectors preferred.
- Exceptional interviewing, storytelling, and editorial skills.
- Ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise, engaging narratives.
- Familiarity with industry analysis, market research, and/or business intelligence is a plus.
- Self-starter who work independently with clients, and meet deadlines.
Preferred Background
- Former journalist, business reporter, energy correspondent, industry analyst, or consultant.
- Experience writing for B2B audiences, trade publications, consulting firms, research organizations, or corporate communications teams.
- Based in Houston, TX, with familiarity with the energy industry ecosystem and key market players.
