Purpose
Our client is seeking a highly skilled Freelance Retail Designer to provide expert 3D visualization and fixture design services. In this role, you will act as a key creative partner to the Retail Design team, transforming conceptual ideas into high-fidelity SketchUp renderings and technical fixture designs. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can produce presentation-ready visuals and detailed documentation that align with our brand standards and merchandising strategies across the fleet.
Key Responsibilities
● Advanced 3D Visualization: Lead the development of detailed SketchUp models and photorealistic renderings for store updates, including new locations, and refurbish strategies.
● Custom Fixture Design: Translate design concepts into detailed technical drawings for custom retail fixtures, focusing on materiality, joinery, and functional retail needs.
● Documentation Delivery: Produce comprehensive design intent packages (sections, elevations, and material callouts) ready for issuance to external consultants and project partners.
● Visual Storytelling: Create high-impact presentation materials for internal reviews, ensuring all renderings communicate the brand’s aesthetic clearly to stakeholders.
● Guideline & Material Support: Assist in updating digital retail design guidelines and researching innovative materials to ensure design solutions remain cutting-edge and scalable.
Technical Expertise
● Mastery of SketchUp: Expert-level proficiency in 3D modeling, with a specific focus on complex retail environments and custom furniture/fixture detailing.
● High-End Rendering Capabilities: Proven experience using rendering engines (e.g., V-Ray, Enscape, or Lumion) to produce photorealistic visuals that communicate lighting, texture, and brand atmosphere.
● Drafting & Documentation: Proficiency in AutoCAD or SketchUp LayOut to produce clear, accurate design intent packages, including elevations, sections, and technical fixture details.
● Adobe Creative Suite: Strong skills in Photoshop (for render post-production) and InDesign (for creating professional presentation decks and brand guidelines).
Design & Industry Knowledge
● Retail Specialist: Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in retail design, visual merchandising, or exhibit design.
● Fixture Fabrication Savvy: A deep understanding of materials (wood, metal, glass, acrylic), joinery, and manufacturing processes to ensure custom designs are buildable and durable.
● Spatial Awareness: Ability to translate 2D floor plans into 3D experiences while maintaining strict adherence to ADA requirements and building constraints.
Freelance & Soft Skills
● Collaborative Integration: Ability to function as a seamless extension of the internal Retail Design team, maintaining a high level of receptivity to feedback and design iterations.
● Proactive Communication: Exceptional clarity in verbal and written communication; ability to provide regular project status updates and flag potential design or timeline risks early.
● Portfolio: A robust portfolio showcasing high-quality 3D renderings and specific examples of custom fixture drawings from previous retail projects.
Education:
Bachelors degree in Architecture or equivalent mandatory
Salary / Hourly:
$35-40 p hour
