SPACES by Hollie Velten is a story-driven interior design studio rooted in research, nostalgia, and material exploration. We are a small, focused team working across full-home renovations and furnishing projects, with an emphasis on bespoke millwork, thoughtful detailing, and close collaboration with trades.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Freelance Junior Architectural Designer (2–8 years experience) to support the studio across all phases of design—from existing conditions through construction.
Working directly under the Founder / Creative Director, this role focuses on translating design intent into clear, accurate, and buildable work. The position is highly detail-driven, supporting both technical development and day-to-day project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Documentation + Drawings
- Produce existing condition drawings (plans, elevations, details) through site visits and digital tools
- Develop furnishing plans and renovation drawing sets in CAD
- Create and refine custom millwork drawings and concepts
- Assist in architectural documentation across SD, DD, and CD phases
- Maintain organized drawing sets and project files
3D + Visualization
- Build and maintain Rhino 3D models and assist with visual outputs (Enscape or similar)
- Support internal design development through 3D studies and spatial testing
Design Development
- Support space planning, detailing, and material integration
- Assist in resolving technical elements including millwork, trim, transitions, plumbing, and layouts
- Research and document materials, fixtures, and furnishings
Construction + Coordination
- Attend site visits for field verification and measurements
- Support communication with contractors, millworkers, and trades
- Assist in reviewing shop drawings and construction progress
Studio Support
- Maintain internal systems, drawing standards, and sample libraries
- Support procurement coordination and documentation
- Assist with client presentations as needed
Qualifications
- 2–8 years experience in architecture, interior architecture, or related field
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (required); Rhino or similar 3D modeling tools preferred
- Working knowledge of residential construction and detailing
- Experience with millwork, plumbing, and electrical coordination
- Strong attention to accuracy, organization, and detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines
- Clear communication and collaborative mindset
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and access to a car (regular site visits required)
- Availability Monday–Thursday, 9:00am–3:00pm, with flexibility as needed
- Based in or able to commute to Maplewood, NJ studio
