The ROLE:
The Director of Editorial is responsible for managing the execution of day-to-day copy and storytelling needs for Milk Makeup. The Director of Editorial is an expert in editorial writing + editing, story packaging, brand voice, and SEO, in addition to being a thoughtful leader and manager on the editorial team.
Please note that this is a temporary, full-time parental leave cover position, starting in March and continuing until October.
What YOU’ll do:
- Brand Builder: Partners with CCO to execute and uphold brand voice guidelines. Ensures consistency in brand voice and editorial standards across all 360 touchpoints.
- Strategic Thinker: Partners with CCO to execute 360 creative strategy to support business goals. Understands both marketing and creative needs to provide creative solutions that support brand positioning. Maintains on-brand editorial, voice, and messaging direction across all channels, including but not limited to: creative concepting/storytelling, paid media, dotcom, blog, packaging copy, in-store fixtures, video scripts, brand and cultural initiatives, customer service responses, etc.
- Creative Collaborator: Partners closely with Creative Leadership, Marketing, Visual Creative, Product Development, and Visual Merchandising teams to execute creative concepts for robust 360 client experiences. This includes but is not limited to: liaising with social marketing on brand voice and storytelling packaging, creative storytelling/editorial and campaign hooks, in-store messaging, imagery, and overall brand/campaign expression.
- Cross-functional Partner: Builds and maintains relationships with cross-functional partners to ensure strategic objectives are met. Regularly meets and collaborates with various cross-functional teams including Brand Marketing, Product Development, Community Engagement, Social, Retail, Dotcom, EDU, CX, and International.
- External Partner: Partners with outside agencies and vendors when appropriate including: Strategic agencies, paid media partners, freelance writers, etc.
- Inspirational Mentor: Leads with creative vision and inspires editorial and marketing teams to think strategically, creates exciting elevated creative solutions, and guides the brand copywriter to prioritize workload. Educates team in creative expertise and beauty knowledge, including brand tone of voice, strategic messaging, editorial guidelines, and best practices.
- Skilled Presenter: Represents creative team in a variety of settings: large/small groups, direct reports, managers, formal presentations.
Leadership:
- Review and approve key editorial strategies, content plans, and brand storytelling initiatives developed by the Editorial team, ensuring alignment with brand voice guidelines, effective execution across all touchpoints, and cohesive messaging that supports business goals.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, offer constructive feedback, and actively engage in the development of the Editorial team in line with the company's performance engagement expectations.
- Embody and champion the behavioral values outlined in the MMU DNA, fostering a positive and inclusive team culture that reflects the company's core principles and promotes strong collaboration with cross-functional teams.
We’d like YOU to have:
- 7-10+ years of writing and editing experience.
- College degree; BA or BFA preferred.
- Passion for branding, strategy, and storytelling.
- Knowledge and expertise in retail and digital space.
- Understanding of beauty and fashion.
- Understanding of current industry related trends.
- Management experience.
- Strong leadership, negotiation and consensus-building skills.
- Strong relationship-building skills; ability to work with a variety of people in various disciplines.
- Team player: Enjoys working with others and collaborating with a positive attitude.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Excellent presentation skills at both team and leadership levels.
- Solid organizational skills, detail-oriented; time management skills, ability to juggle priorities.
