Small, non-profit dive training agency in High Springs, Florida, is seeking to contract with several part-time, freelance copy editors for $19 per hour for an average of 2-8 hours per week.
Our monthly online magazine is host to technical, scuba-related articles that range from approximately 1,000 to 4,000 words, many of which are submitted by non-native English speakers. Each piece of writing is edited for clarity and grammatical correctness in Google Docs by two copy editors via Suggesting mode. Work is assigned by the magazine’s editor-in-chief and suggested edits are reviewed and finalized by the copy editing team leader. Deadlines are normally 10-15 days before the publication date. We don’t use, nor do we tolerate using AI.
Responsibilities
- Copy edit articles for grammar, syntax, punctuation, and style using Google Docs in Suggesting mode, abiding by AP Style rules.
- Utilize an in-house style guide for industry and organization-specific terminology and formatting, ensuring consistent usage throughout an article.
- Use Google search to verify correct spellings and capitalization of dive site names, shipwrecks, people, etc. within an article.
- Maintain the author’s voice, intent, and personality as much as possible, especially when editing content from non-native English authors.
- Adhere to established deadlines from the copy editing team leader and editor-in-chief.
Qualifications
- Prior copy editing/proofreading experience
- Advanced grammar and syntax skill with knowledge of AP Style
- Keen attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and adhere to deadlines
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
To Apply
- Email your resume highlighting your experience and a cover letter telling us about you and why you’re interested in this job to ------------.
- If selected, you will be sent a sample article to provide suggested edits for overall clarity and grammatical correctness.
- Once the completed article is returned, we will review and make a determination as soon as possible.
This job can be done remotely; you do not have to live in the Gainesville area, nor do you have to scuba dive, although either or both might be convenient. We will do our best to reply to all applicants—not just those who are selected.
