Contract, Freelance Copywriter
Location: San Francisco, Hybrid (In Office Tuesday - Thursday)
Hey there! At Marine Layer, we’re all about chill vibes and comfy style. We design and whip up our own line of laid-back apparel, and guess what? We’ve got 50 of our own stores (and counting) all over the country, plus a super cool e-commerce and wholesale scene going on.
At Marine Layer, our commitment to being a positive impact on our communities and planet is at the core of our mission as a B Corporation. We embed social and environmental responsibility into our operations, including employee training focused on these issues and managerial roles that explicitly address performance in these areas.
Our journey from a small start-up to a nationwide fave has been fueled by an awesome crew who works hard but knows how to keep it fun. We’re all about staying true to our roots while bringing in some seriously talented folks who want to help us build something amazing together. And that’s where you come in… Ready to join the ride?
Job description
We are looking for a creative, collaborative Freelance Copywriter Associate to join our team. If you’re familiar with our company, you know we have a pretty distinct voice - playful, laid back and very much us. Whoever takes on this role should be living it, and feel comfortable talking the talk, so to speak.
Scope:
The main focus for this role is copywriting across all mediums. You’ll work directly with our Brand Copy Manager to concept and write for our channels, and collaborate closely with team members in marketing, merchandising, and more.
Some things you’ll be writing include:
- Catalogs
- Marketing emails
- Paid Social
- Website: landing pages, product descriptions, etc
- Product names & descriptions, hang tags, etc.
- Store messaging/ store signage
- You’ll also be helping us deepen our product storytelling. You’ll need to get to know our line well, and hold deep knowledge on products, fabrics, and techniques (our designers and merchandisers will help get you up to speed), that you can translate into strong customer-facing copy.
Qualifications:
- Experience Writing for Apparel a Big Plus
- We don’t expect anyone to know everything, but being familiar with the category and its conventions, brands, and best practices is a huge benefit. If it’s a category you’re passionate about personally, even if you haven’t worked on an apparel brand, that’s the next best thing.
- Self Starter + Strategic Thinker
- You should have a proven ability to bring original ideas to the table (and better yet, bring them to life).
- Desire to work in a start‐up (ish) environment.
- We’re a good hang, but we are still a small, scrappy start-up. We all work very hard, do a little bit of everything, and believe deeply in the future of this company. You should be comfortable multi-tasking, pivoting, and managing your own deadlines.
- Possess excellent communication skills.
- Every member of our team collaborates on a daily basis to keep the gears turning here at Marine Layer, and solid communication is one of the keys to our success. It’s crucial that you’ll be able to do the same.
Fine Print: We ask that you have the following qualifications:
- 3-6 yrs experience in a relevant position
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience
- Based in the Bay Area and able to work at our office here in San Francisco
- Hourly Rate: $75/hr

Marine Layer is proud to be an equal opportunity employer that welcomes applicants and employees of all genders, races, backgrounds, orientations, and nationalities.
Guess we’ve made it big: we heard someone out there is using fake job offers from us for a phishing scam. Wishing them bad vibes, but also wanted to share a few tips on how to stay safe.
We keep it direct when it comes to recruitment: our hiring communications will always come from a @marinelayer.com account
- Double-check the email address: most hiring messages come from either HQhiring@marinelayer.com or Jobs@marinelayer.com
- If someone’s asking you to buy supplies for your first day, it’s not us. (We’d hook you up with that)
- We will never ask for personal information before onboarding. Keep that to yourself.
- Just follow these four steps, watch out for sketchy links, and you too can ruin a scammer’s day.
