Job Title: Technical Writer / Operational Knowledge Management Specialist
Job Description
This role serves as the primary owner of the departments operational knowledge library, compiling, organizing, and maintaining critical operational requirements into a centralized, searchable, and operator-friendly reference system. The Technical Writer / Operational Knowledge Management Specialist transforms complex regulatory, operational, and contractual documents into concise, practical guidance that supports real-time decision making across the fleet.
Responsibilities
- Compile and organize operational requirements from several departments/entities
- Collect and consolidate requirements from contracts and agreements such as Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Interconnection Agreements, Operating Agreements, and Transmission Service Agreements.
- Extract and document key operational requirements related to outage notifications, curtailments, dispatch responsibilities, communications, telemetry, operating restrictions, and emergency operations.
- Develop operator-focused reference materials, including quick reference guides, job aids, process maps, decision trees, outage coordination guides, emergency response playbooks, and contact directories.
- Create and maintain a centralized, searchable knowledge platform that presents operational requirements in an operator-friendly format.
- Ensure each documented requirement includes its source document, governing entity, section reference, source excerpt, and a clear operational interpretation.
- Translate complex regulatory, operational, and contractual language into concise, actionable guidance for real-time operators.
- Maintain version control and organization of all documentation to ensure accuracy, consistency, and ease of access.
- Continuously review, update, and refine documentation as requirements, contracts, and operational practices evolve.
- Collaborate with operations, compliance, and other stakeholders to validate interpretations and ensure guidance aligns with actual operational practices.
Essential Skills
- Strong technical writing skills with a focus on clarity, accuracy, and usability.
- Proven experience in document creation, including the development of standard operating procedures and operational guides.
- Ability to interpret and simplify complex technical, operational, and contractual information for practical, real-time use.
- Demonstrated document management skills, including organization, structure, and maintenance of large information libraries.
- Bachelors degree or equivalent experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in utility, power generation, compliance, or operations environments.
- Familiarity with ISO/RTO or Balancing Authority operations, including entities such as CAISO, ERCOT, and SPP.
- Experience working with operational requirements from Transmission Operators (TOPs) and Reliability Coordinators (RCs).
- Background in creating process maps, decision trees, and other visual aids to support operational decision making.
Work Environment
This position is based onsite in an office environment. The role involves working closely with operational and compliance teams, using standard office technology and software tools to build and maintain a centralized, searchable knowledge platform. The environment supports focused documentation work, collaboration with stakeholders, and access to operational documents and systems needed to support real-time operations.

This is a Contract position based out of Birmingham, AL.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
