We are hiring a Freelance Designer in Sweaters and Knits for a top fashion company in NYC!
Responsibilities:
- Working closely with design leadership, identify big ideas and key items that will answer the seasonal brief and business needs
- Excellent sketching and vector CAD skills that communicate proper proportion, details, and construction for presentation decks and tech packs
- Lead wash and color development seasonally, including new washes and updates to existing fabrics
- Maintain thorough knowledge of raw materials and work with the materials team to source seasonal fabrics; attend weekly material meetings to manage requests and approvals; support the design director with seasonal platforming needs for material pre-positioning
- Partner with design leadership on seasonal presentations and key milestones; confidently field questions from executive leadership
- Oversee seasonal decks with up-to-date information on details, wash, and color
- Create tech packs ensuring all information clearly communicates design intent; review work for accuracy, flag questions, and seek guidance from the design director when needed
- Partner with production to schedule handoffs according to calendar deadlines aligned with design leadership
- Attend and support all style fittings; guide teams through fit comments and follow-up actions
- Manage trim submissions and approvals, including color, print, and stripe approvals
- Oversee gold tag, shade band, and other color/material approvals
- Handle daily vendor communication via email
- Partner with production to achieve the highest quality product within target cost structures
- Collaborate with merchants to ensure design aligns with seasonal needs and evolving changes
- Manage the design team’s workload and day-to-day priorities across overlapping seasons
- In-person/in-office collaboration is required; frequency (e.g., part of the week or full week) is based on business needs and includes product development, milestone meetings, and approvals
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion or Art (or equivalent experience and education)
- Experience working in apparel; knits and fleece experience is a plus
- 5+ years of related experience
- Keen eye for color, trend, detail, and construction
- Ability to multitask and prioritize based on business objectives
- Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and Excel; PLM experience is a plus
- Ability to act as a liaison between multiple departments; strong communication and analytical skills
- Detail-oriented, computer literate, and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
