About Us
Flagship Publishing is home to a collection of vibrant, award-winning regional magazines that celebrate the places, people and stories that make our communities unique. With a focus on quality journalism, compelling design and authentic voice, our titles connect deeply with readers across the Great Plains, Mountain West and beyond.
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and deadline-driven Managing Editor to lead day-to-day editorial operations across our family of magazines. This role is central to maintaining the high editorial standards and strong storytelling that define our brand.
Flagship’s editorial approach centers on narrative, place-driven storytelling – features and profiles that go beyond quick takes or lists, and instead reflect the richness and character of the communities we serve. We aim to inform, inspire and connect readers through journalism that has lasting impact.
The Managing Editor will oversee production schedules, coordinate editorial workflows and collaborate closely with writers, designers and marketing teams to ensure each issue delivers compelling, community-driven content on time and with excellence.
This is a salaried position that requires flexibility and dedication, with the understanding that responsibilities may extend beyond a standard 40-hour workweek – especially during key production periods.

- Manage day-to-day operations: content planning, assignments, tracking and team communication
- Work with freelance writers, photographers and in-house staff to develop and refine stories
- Edit and fact-check articles for voice, clarity and accuracy
- Coordinate with art and design teams to bring layouts, copy and images together seamlessly
- Lead production meetings and monitor deadlines
- Support the Editorial Director in shaping features, departments and sponsored content
- Approve final content before files go to print
- Ensure consistency across titles in tone, quality and editorial integrity
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or a related field
- 8+ years of editorial experience, preferably in magazines or regional publishing
- Strong editing and organizational skills with attention to voice and detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet overlapping deadlines
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Knowledge of AP Style and comfort managing remote contributors
- Proficiency in tools including Smartsheet, Dropbox, Slack, Microsoft Teams and Adobe InDesign/InCopy
- Familiarity with regional storytelling and an interest in local culture, travel and lifestyle
- A demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to new tools and platforms, including generative AI, communication apps and workflow systems that enhance editorial quality and efficiency
- A growth mindset and curiosity about how technology can support great storytelling and streamline production
Nice to Have
- Experience working with advertising or marketing teams on sponsored content
- Experience with digital workflows or multi-platform content
- Certified Project Manager (PMP or similar) or training in editorial/project management
