Job Title: Part-Time Communications Specialist
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Communications Specialist to provide part-time communications support for a university library system. This role will be responsible for creating engaging content that highlights the value, impact, services, collections, programs, and spaces offered by the libraries. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller and writer who can translate subject matter expertise into compelling content for students, faculty, donors, and the broader community.
This is a flexible, approximately 20-hour-per-week engagement focused primarily on copywriting, content creation, and communications strategy execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and write internal and external communications that promote library programs, services, collections, events, and initiatives.
- Create a variety of content, including:
- News stories
- Press releases
- Faculty and student profile stories
- Donor-focused impact stories
- Blog posts
- Social media content
- Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff, donors, and other stakeholders to gather stories and testimonials.
- Transform information provided by subject matter experts into polished, audience-focused communications.
- Create compelling narratives that demonstrate the impact of library resources and donor support.
- Support communications targeted toward three primary audiences:
- Students
- Faculty
- Donors and supporters
- Collaborate with library leadership to execute ongoing communications strategies and priorities.
- Participate in marketing and public relations committee meetings and collaborate with stakeholders across multiple departments.
- Coordinate with institutional communications and marketing teams to develop and distribute external communications.
- Manage content revisions and feedback cycles, ensuring high-quality deliverables and stakeholder satisfaction.
- Maintain consistency in messaging, voice, and branding across communication channels.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, English, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Proven experience writing press releases, feature stories, profiles, newsletters, blogs, and social media content.
- Excellent interviewing, storytelling, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Ability to understand complex topics and translate them into clear, engaging content for multiple audiences.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Experience collaborating with subject matter experts and managing multiple concurrent assignments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and cloud-based collaboration tools, including OneDrive.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in higher education, libraries, nonprofit organizations, or mission-driven institutions.
- Experience creating donor-focused communications and fundraising impact stories.
- Familiarity with public relations and marketing best practices.
- Experience supporting content strategy across multiple communication channels.
Work Schedule
- Approximately 20 hours per week.
- Flexible schedule based on project needs and stakeholder availability.
The pay for this W-2 position ranges from
$25.71-$30 per hour. This position may be eligible for PTO, health and dental insurance, and/or 401(k) benefits upon meeting certain length of service and hours requirements.
