Role Description: The Sports Journalist will provide daily coverage of Oklahoma athletics, with a focus on all sports, while serving as a beat writer for various teams through features, interviews, analysis and new media content such as video and podcasts. This full-time, on-site role in Norman, Okla., involves attending practices, games, press conferences, and community events to gather news and develop sources. Sports journalism is evolving and changing and we're looking for someone capable of evolving and growing with us. The Sports Journalist position at SoonerScoop is about telling the story through a multitude of different outlets. Reaching an engaged and loyal audience where they consume news, information and entertainment. This is still a position that requires the discipline to manage multiple roles while working with editors, producers, advertisers and other staff to plan and execute coverage. Responsibilities include monitoring breaking news, engaging with audiences on digital platforms, and maintaining high standards of accuracy and fairness in all reporting. Strong writing skills are a must, but so is the ability to appear on camera or in front of a microphone on our quickly growing new media platforms.
Qualifications:
- Candidates should possess strong sports writing and knowledge pertaining to college football, basketball, softball and baseball to produce insightful and accurate coverage.
- Candidates should possess solid Writing and Communication skills to create clear, engaging, and timely content.
- Candidates should possess core Journalism skills, including reporting, interviewing, fact-checking, and ethical judgment.
- Candidates should possess the ability or willingness to learn digital publishing tools, social media platforms, and multimedia practices.
- Candidates should possess the ability to work on deadline, manage multiple assignments, and collaborate effectively with a team.
- Relevant experience covering sports, particularly college athletics or football, is highly beneficial.
- A degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience, is preferred.
