Technical Writer III
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer III to support the development, maintenance, and publication of technical documentation for complex engineering systems and programs. This role requires collaboration with engineers, program teams, and subject matter experts to create clear, accurate, and customer-focused documentation that supports operations, maintenance, testing, and training activities.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical writing expertise, experience working within multidisciplinary engineering environments, and the ability to transform complex technical information into well-structured documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, edit, and maintain technical documentation including:
- Operations manuals
- Maintenance manuals
- Technical procedures
- Test plans
- Technical guides and supplements
- Training materials
- Collaborate with engineers, program managers, and other subject matter experts to gather information and ensure documentation accuracy.
- Create documentation using engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, block diagrams, CAD models, and other technical source materials.
- Host and facilitate documentation review meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
- Incorporate review feedback and maintain document revisions and version control.
- Verify documentation compliance with applicable standards, customer requirements, and intended audience needs.
- Develop and maintain documentation templates, layout guides, graphics resources, and style standards.
- Assist with Contract Data Requirements List (CDRL) documentation preparation and delivery.
- Support the review and formatting of technical reports, proposals, business documentation, and customer deliverables.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Communications, Engineering, or a related field.
- 6+ years of professional technical writing experience.
- Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Advanced knowledge of technical writing principles, practices, and standards.
- Strong experience with:
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Adobe publishing tools
- Experience creating and editing technical documents containing graphics, tables, and embedded content.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering and development teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Fluent English proficiency (reading, writing, and speaking).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with S1000D and XML-based documentation systems.
- Experience developing technical documentation with limited guidance from subject matter experts.
- Knowledge of documentation lifecycle management, content verification, and configuration control.
- Experience maintaining technical data libraries and reference documentation.
- Familiarity with:
- Test plans and procedures
- Operations and maintenance manuals
- Training and process documentation
- Proposal and RFP documentation
- Product management documentation
- Marketing and organizational communications
- Experience using Adobe FrameMaker.
- Experience supporting aerospace, defense, aviation, highly engineered products, or regulated industries.
Work Environment
- Combination of office and technical work environments.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and computer-based work.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for keyboard and documentation activities.
- Occasional lifting or carrying of materials up to 25 pounds.
- May occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, operational environments, loud noise, or industrial work areas.

Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Reno, NV.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $50.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
