Freelance High School Sports Writer
The Greenville Advocate is looking for passionate sports storytellers to join our freelance writing team.
Are you a sports fan who knows the local teams, follows the scores, and enjoys telling the stories behind the athletes and games? We’re seeking freelance high school sports writers to provide timely, engaging coverage of local high school athletics.
What You’ll Do
- Cover high school football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, and other sports.
- Attend games and produce accurate, timely game stories.
- Interview coaches, athletes, and other relevant sources.
- Highlight standout performances, team achievements, rivalries, and compelling human-interest stories.
- Submit stories, scores, statistics, and photos according to established deadlines.
- Develop relationships with local schools, coaches, athletic departments, and athletes.
- Occasionally contribute previews, features, rankings, or other sports-related content.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong writing and reporting skills.
- A genuine interest in high school sports.
- Ability to meet deadlines, often on nights and weekends.
- Comfortable conducting interviews and gathering information at games.
- Strong attention to accuracy, names, statistics, and details.
- Reliable communication and professional conduct.
- Previous journalism, sports-writing, or reporting experience is preferred but not required.
Compensation
This is a freelance, paid position, with the quantity based on assignments and coverage. Opportunities may range from individual game assignments to regular coverage of a school, team, or sport. Compensation is typically $40 per story and is paid monthly.
