Role Description The Communications and Storytelling Coordinator is a full-time, on-site role based in Huntsville, AL. This position is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies that highlight the organization’s programs, impact, and community voices. Daily tasks include drafting press releases, writing stories and features, managing media outreach, and maintaining consistent messaging across digital and print channels. The coordinator will collaborate with program staff to gather testimonials, create content for newsletters and social media, and prepare materials for events and campaigns. This role also involves tracking communications metrics, strengthening relationships with local media, and ensuring that all storytelling reflects the organization’s values of inclusion and empowerment.
Position Summary
The Communications and Storytelling Coordinator captures and shares UWOC’s work through newsletters, website content, media outreach, and storytelling. This role requires a strong writer who can work independently, meet deadlines, and turn programs and events into clear, engaging content.
Key Responsibilities
• Plan, write, edit, and build the weekly newsletter in Action Network
• Maintain the newsletter storyboard and content calendar
• Interview participants, staff, partners, and community members
• Write program stories, event recaps, blogs, website content, and impact stories
• Publish and edit content in Squarespace
• Write press releases, media advisories, op eds, and media submissions
• Attend selected events to gather stories, quotes, photos, and information
• Draft social media captions for coordination with digital media
• Maintain the photo archive and communications files
• Track newsletter and website performance
Qualifications
• Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills
• Strong interviewing, organization, and deadline management
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision
• Strong initiative, problem solving, integrity, and follow through
• Collaborative team player with sound judgment
• Proficiency with Google Workspace
• Experience with or ability to quickly learn Action Network and Squarespace
Preferred: Experience in journalism, communications, public relations, nonprofit communications, email marketing, or website publishing.
Status: Part Time
Hours: 15 to 20 hours per week
Compensation: $23 to $26 per hour
Reports To: Executive Director
Employment begins with a 90 day probationary period to evaluate writing quality, reliability, independence, teamwork, and successful completion of assigned communications work.
