Role Description The Freelance Writer is a part-time, hybrid role based in Kansas City, MO, with a mix of on-site reporting and work-from-home writing and research. This role involves pitching story ideas, conducting interviews, attending local events or meetings as needed, and writing clear, accurate, and engaging articles on community news, features, and human-interest stories. The writer will fact-check information, meet editorial deadlines, and collaborate with editors to refine story angles and follow the publication’s style and standards. Day-to-day tasks include researching local issues, gathering quotes and background information, drafting and revising articles, and preparing content suitable for both print and online formats. The role may also include taking basic photographs to accompany stories and adapting content for digital channels when required.
Qualifications
- Strong reporting and writing skills, including the ability to craft clear, concise, and engaging news and feature stories.
- Experience with interviewing, research, and fact-checking to ensure accuracy and credibility in all articles.
- Editing and proofreading abilities to maintain consistent quality, tone, and adherence to editorial guidelines.
- Comfort with basic digital tools for document creation, online research, and submitting work electronically.
- Knowledge of or interest in local community issues in south Kansas City and surrounding areas.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, and meet deadlines in a part-time, freelance environment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with editors and sources in a professional manner.
- Relevant experience in journalism, communications, or writing; coursework or a degree in a related field is beneficial but not required.
- Reliable transportation for attending local events, interviews, and on-site reporting when needed.
