With a commitment to journalistic integrity, news equity and balanced representation, we are seeking a skilled, creative and hardworking News Managing Editor that loves and understands the planet of Brooklyn.
Job Overview:
As the News Managing Editor, you will be responsible for overseeing the team of freelance writers and interns; managing daily operations, and ensuring the delivery of compelling, accurate, and timely news content. This role requires an out-the-box thinker around news engagement for a rapidly changing digital news landscape and its relationship with social media. We are seeking someone who is a hands-on leader passionate about journalism and elevating the voices of the underrepresented and underserved.
Responsibilities:
Editorial Leadership:
- Provide strategic direction for news coverage in alignment with organizational goals.
- Lead and inspire a team of journalists, editors, and reporters to achieve excellence in reporting.
- Manage workflow and assignments to meet deadlines.
Content Oversight:
- Review and edit news stories for accuracy, clarity, and adherence to journalistic standards.
- Ensure an inclusive and diverse palette of news that matches the borough’s residential makeup
- A creative thinker who is in touch with the news that resonates with younger audiences.
Team Management:
- Mentor newsroom staff and interns and provide constructive feedback.
- Collaborate with external partners and contributors to expand news coverage.
- Innovation and Adaptation:
- Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies in journalism.
- Propose and implement innovative approaches to news storytelling.
Qualifications: (Managing editor experience not required; can be trained)
- At least 7 years of writing and reporting experience
- Strong editorial judgment and familiarity with news reporting standards.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Familiarity with digital media trends and social media platforms.
- A bachelor’s degree
- Must be a Brooklyn resident.
