We are seeking a highly skilled
Freelance Graphic Designer / Senior Communications Specialist to join a premier national public health association for a 3-month temporary assignment. In this role, you will contribute directly to the advancement of public health practice by ensuring consistently high-quality design standards across multiple InDesign deliverables, including case studies, research reports, and multi-page publications.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, you will collaborate closely with internal program directors, authors, and the publications manager to bring diverse public health topics to life. You will manage multiple design projects simultaneously from concept to final production, ensuring strict adherence to branding and visual quality control guidelines.
Please note: Candidates must provide their own laptop and design equipment for this remote role.
Responsibilities:
- Publication & Page Layout: Manage multiple Adobe InDesign projects from initial concept through final production and pre-press packaging. Create sophisticated layouts for multi-page publications, case studies, and research reports.
- Brand & Visual Asset Creation: Develop original illustrations or utilize internal photo libraries to create compelling layouts and associated web assets using advanced typography, imagery, and color theory.
- Client Collaboration & Consulting: Lead internal consultation meetings with program leaders to brainstorm requirements, present rough drafts, incorporate feedback, and ensure alignment with established brand guidelines.
- Project Management: Establish timelines, track project milestones, and balance competing priorities to meet strict deadlines (with multiple key products due by July 31, 2026). Complete weekly progress reports using tools like Smartsheet or Excel.
- Quality Control & Editing: Review all files for visual errors before publishing and apply copyediting/proofreading skills to enhance written materials.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Communications, Marketing, or a related field is preferred.
- Technical Mastery: Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Familiarity with Canva, iStock, or SharePoint is a plus.
- Design Expertise: A strong portfolio demonstrating a firm grasp of design principles, multi-page layout composition, typography, and strict brand adherence.
- Communication Skills: Advanced interpersonal skills with the ability to pitch design concepts clearly, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and accept constructive feedback gracefully.
- Content Skills: Solid writing, proofreading, and copyediting skills are highly preferred, along with experience developing creative or technical written materials.
