High Point Discovered is seeking an experienced freelance feature writer with strong journalistic instincts, editorial discipline, and a passion for meaningful community storytelling.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, HPD exists to connect the people of High Point, North Carolina through authentic, high-quality storytelling that captures the voices, vision, and momentum of our city. We are looking for ready-to-go writers who can quickly adapt to the HPD voice and produce polished, compelling editorial content for our annual print magazine and digital platforms.
This is not an entry-level content writing role. We are seeking experienced writers who can independently execute interviews and produce publication-ready magazine storytelling with minimal editorial oversight. This role is ideally suited for someone located in the Greater High Point, N.C., as in-person interviews and meetings will be required.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
- 3-5+ years experience in journalism, editorial writing, magazine writing, or feature storytelling
- Exceptional writing, grammar, and communication skills
- Strong research and interview capabilities
- Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines
- Organized, responsive, and detail-oriented
- Passion for community-centered storytelling
- Located within the Greater High Point, N.C.
General Responsibilities
We need talented writers who can:
- Write in a strong journalistic and feature-writing style
- Quickly understand and replicate HPD’s editorial voice and tone
- Produce long-form feature stories (up to 2,400 words) and/or concise Meet & Greet profiles (approximately 300 words)
- Conduct interviews and background research efficiently (HPD will assist with scheduling)
- Deliver clean, accurate, publication-ready drafts on deadline
- Balance storytelling creativity with professionalism, accuracy, and structure
Job Responsibilities
Assignments may include:
- Feature Articles: In-depth magazine stories (up to 2,400 words)
- Meet & Greet Profiles: Short-form spotlight pieces (approximately 300 words)
- Interviewing community leaders, business owners, residents, or featured subjects
- Independent research and fact-checking
- Revising drafts based on editorial feedback
- Submitting final copy for print and digital publication

Application Process:
To ensure writers are the right fit for HPD’s editorial voice, selected applicants may be asked to complete a writing assessment as part of the application process. This includes:
- Listening to a pre-recorded sample interview
- Drafting an approximately 800-word article based on that interview
- Demonstrating the ability to capture HPD’s storytelling style, tone, structure, and journalistic quality
This assessment helps us identify writers who can effectively translate interviews into compelling HPD-style editorial content.
