About the Mission
Rancho Obi-Wan is a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit Museum in Petaluma, California dedicated to preserving and celebrating Star Wars fandom through its collection—the largest of its kind in the world.
Rancho Obi-Wan is also leading the development of The Saga Museum of Star Wars Memorabilia which will bring together four major Star Wars collections, with more than 1.5 million objects, to create a new, unique, over-the-top experience that highlights the global cultural impact of the Star Wars stories and the creativity of its fans.
Our mission is to preserve and celebrate the history of Star Wars memorabilia and fandom, and to inspire visitors of all ages and backgrounds through the stories those artifacts tell by fostering joy, creativity, community, learning, and a sense of wonder that extends far beyond the walls of the Museum itself.
As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Star Wars in 2027, we are planning national traveling exhibits, a comprehensive publications program, and a digital video series. This role is pivotal in bringing these stories to a global audience.
The Role
We are looking for a creative, highly driven marketing lead, turning fan enthusiasm into meaningful support for the Museum, including helping drive donations, membership growth, and ongoing supporter engagement through content, community, and campaigns. You’ll play a key part in helping fund the future of the Museum by engaging a global audience of fans, collectors, and supporters.
You’ll have the opportunity to work with extraordinary content, contribute ideas at a strategic level, and build hands-on experience with fundraising-driven marketing, while collaborating with leadership and board members who bring context and access to relationships within the fan and collector community.
Essential Job Functions
This role is well-suited for someone who is self-directed and comfortable working in a developing environment where not all systems are fully built, and can build and maintain their own workflows, while problem-solving any pitfalls along the way.
- Content & Social Media: Oversee all social media channels, monthly newsletters, and blogs for the Museum community. Create original content, including text, photos, and videos, for Rancho Obi-Wan, The Saga Museum, or Steve Sansweet on Facebook, Instagram/Threads, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, BlueSky, YouTube, Hive, Vimeo, and other emerging digital platforms
- Campaign Management: Plan and execute multi-channel marketing campaigns (social, email, and web) that convert fans into donors and retains on-going Members.
- Community Management & Engagement: Foster an active and inclusive online community by responding to inquiries, moderating comments, and engaging with fans and donors to build long-term loyalty. Oversee the Museum’s online reputation and local SEO by managing listings and responding to visitor reviews on travel and review platforms.
- Analytics & Reporting: Track performance across campaigns (engagement, email growth, conversions, donations) using insights to refine messaging and improve results as we progress toward organizational goals.
- Brand Stewardship / IP Compliance & Confidentiality: Ensure all marketing materials and social content adhere to both internal brand standards and external licensing/fair use guidelines. Maintain a professional and respectful tone that honors the legacy of the franchise, its creators, and its fans.
- Relationship Management: Manage relationships with press, influencers, and celebrities.
- Other Duties as Assigned: Occasional support for Museum events, pop-ups, collection projects, and presentations, including impact stories and visuals for grant applications, member reports, and other high-level communications.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 1-3 years in marketing, social media, or content creation. demonstrating the ability to manage campaigns and complex projects autonomously with minimal supervision and high accountability.
- Social Media & Digital Marketing Fluency: Direct experience managing content and measuring performance across multiple major social media channels, including paid media.
- Creative Acumen: Strong writing, storytelling, and visual content instincts.
- Analytical Skills: Proven ability to identify and track success metrics across coordinated campaigns.
- Self-Starter: Autonomous worker who can handle ambiguity and identify what needs doing and do it without waiting to be asked.
- Strong Communication & Organization Skills: Reliable, collaborative, communicative, and deadline-driven, following through and flagging problems early, keeping the team informed along the way.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Non-Profit Experience: Marketing or board experience within museums or 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations.
- Public Relations: Competency in managing and maintaining high-level relationships with influencers, media, and celebrities.
- Technical Ads Experience: Hands-on experience managing paid ads within Meta Ads Manager and Google Ads (even basic campaigns).
- Tech Stack: Experience with Amazon Ads, Yelp Ads, and SEO optimization. Proficiency in Google Workspace, Asana, and digital apps and software for content creation.
- Education: Degree in Marketing, Communications, Design, Business, or 3+ years of demonstrated success in a ‘hands-on’ marketing role.
- Subject Matter Expert: Deep knowledge and appreciation for the Star Wars franchise, its memorabilia, and its fandom.
Work Environment, Equipment, & Compliance
- Availability & Responsiveness: Must be available and accessible via email, phone, and messaging apps during work hours. Required to provide regular check-ins, keep track of project hours, and adhere to project deadlines.
- On-Site Presence: Occasional attendance is required for research, content gathering, and events in the San Francisco Bay Area or other locations on an as-needed basis.
- Location: This is a hybrid remote position. Due to the requirement for occasional on-site content gathering and event support, candidates located in Northern California or the SF Bay Area are strongly preferred.
- Physical Demands: This role occasionally requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods during events and traverse a warehouse or convention environment to gather content or manage logistics. The candidate must be able to move or transport marketing materials (up to 25 lbs), such as banners, merchandise, or signage.
