THE ORGANIZATION

The Commonwealth Fund — among the first private foundations started by a woman philanthropist, Anna M. Harkness — was established in 1918 with the broad charge to enhance the common good. Today, the mission of The Commonwealth Fund is to promote a high-performing health care system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, particularly for society’s most vulnerable, including low-income people, the uninsured, and people of color. The Fund carries out this mandate by supporting independent research on health care issues and making grants to improve health care practice and policy. An international program in health policy is designed to stimulate innovative policies and practices in the United States and other industrialized countries.

ROLE OF COMMUNICATIONS

The Fund’s communications strategy is designed to position the foundation as a widely recognized leader in generating timely, authoritative information for health care industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and the news media and to stimulate action to expand health care access and coverage and improve the quality of health care services. Over a typical 12-month period, the Fund produces more than 200 publications and other products, including interactive tools and features, reports and issue briefs, blog posts, newsletters, infographics, videos and podcasts. The Fund’s Communications department manages a robust dissemination effort to promote the research conducted by grantees and Fund staff through email marketing, media outreach, social media, and other vehicles and the Fund overall conducts some 60 annual forums for expert and health policy audiences, including a retreat for Congressional health leaders.

SUMMARY POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Commonwealth Fund seeks a junior graphic designer to support the senior graphic designer and communications department on a contract basis for approximately 6 months (January 2024–June 2024) with the possibility of an extension. The junior designer should be comfortable taking creative direction, working in a fast-paced environment, and managing competing priorities. They should also have excellent time management skills and an understanding of deadlines within an editorial process.

The junior designer will be responsible for collaborating with the senior graphic designer to develop a variety of visually appealing designs for the web and social media. These assets range from graphics for various social media platforms, layouts of publication PDFs including charts and graphs, corporate communications including PowerPoint decks, and general design tasks as assigned.

Specific Responsibilities

Layouts designed and exported as PDFs with InDesign using existing branding and templates, including:

Text and chart-heavy issue briefs and reports
Data-heavy appendix tables
Press releases
Sponsorship ads

Design and cleanup of PowerPoint presentations with the following familiarities:

Understanding of how templates, themes, and master slides function
Understanding of chart-building in PowerPoint, including how data is linked and managed in Excel

Creating exhibits (e.g. maps, charts, graphs) in PowerPoint and translating to online platforms like Infogram

Manipulating and formatting data from Excel
Utilizing different template types
Prepping charts for online display and webpage embedding as well as for download and layout (PPT/PDF)

Marketing and social media needs

Creating weekly static graphics for our Advancing Health Equity Instagram channel using existing templates and branding
Create occasional audiograms with Headliner using existing templates and branding
Creating occasional Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media graphics, as needed
Updating fellowship marketing materials using existing templates and branding

Preferred Qualifications

At least 1-3 years of professional experience
Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign
Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel
Familiarity with Drupal CMS, Infogram charting tool, and Headliner a plus
Ability to work within existing brand standards
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to embrace challenges, feedback, and changes with a positive attitude

Weekly hours: Approximately 20 hours per week

Location: Remote

Compensation: $40-50 per hour
