Asiyah Women’s Center | Brooklyn, New York

Type: Contract | Part-Time or Full-Time Availability

Location: NYC-based, with on-site filming throughout the city

About the Role

You are the voice, face, and creative force behind Asiyah Women’s Center on the internet.

You'll work directly with our Founder & Executive Director to build how Asiyah looks, sounds, and shows up online. Not just posting about what we do, but creating content that people actually want to watch, share, and talk about.

A lot of this job happens outside.

You might be on a street in Brooklyn asking New Yorkers what home means to them. You'll be behind the scenes documenting what it takes to run an emergency women's shelter, while protecting the privacy of the people we serve. You might spend an afternoon interviewing a community leader, filming a fundraising event, or developing an original video series from scratch.

Then you'll take that footage, edit it, and turn it into something worth watching.

We don't want generic nonprofit content. We want storytelling that feels human, current, visually compelling, and culturally relevant.

The goal is simple: build an audience, tell stories that matter, and turn attention into meaningful community engagement.

This isn't an agency job. It isn't traditional nonprofit communications. And it isn't a position for someone who just schedules posts.

It's for someone who understands the internet, knows what makes people stop scrolling, and can take an idea from concept to published content without needing someone to walk them through it.

What You'll Own

Our Channels. You'll take creative ownership of Asiyah's Instagram, TikTok, and other emerging platforms. From planning and filming to editing, captions, and publishing, you're responsible for making sure compelling content consistently goes out.

Original Content Series. We want to create recurring video series that people recognize and come back for. Maybe it's street interviews with New Yorkers, conversations about belonging, a behind-the-scenes documentary series, or something we haven't thought of yet. You'll pitch the ideas, develop the formats, and bring them to life.

The Camera. You'll be out filming, interviewing people, documenting events, and finding stories. You should be comfortable approaching strangers, conducting interviews, and making people feel comfortable on camera.

The Edit. You know how to turn raw footage into a compelling video. Strong hooks, pacing, captions, music, transitions, and storytelling. You can move quickly and deliver polished edits without sacrificing quality.

Our Creative Identity. You'll help define the visual language and personality of Asiyah online. How our content looks, how we speak, what we film, and what makes us different. You have taste, and it shows in your work.

Our Campaigns. You'll create content around fundraising initiatives, community events, organizational milestones, and major campaigns. You know how to turn a campaign into an ongoing conversation rather than a one-time announcement.

Our Community. You'll help us build a genuine digital community, engage with our audience, respond to comments and relevant messages, and identify opportunities for collaboration with creators and community partners.

The Results. You'll track what works and what doesn't. We're interested in views, engagement, shares, audience growth, event participation, volunteer interest, and donations generated through digital content. You'll use those insights to make the next piece of content better.

What We're Looking For

Required

Internet native. You understand what works on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. You've created content people actually watched, and you can explain why it worked.
A strong creative eye. You understand composition, aesthetics, pacing, and what makes a video feel polished.
Comfortable in public. You can approach strangers, conduct street interviews, and film in different environments throughout NYC.
A fast editor. You're proficient in CapCut, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or similar tools and can produce same-day or next-day edits when needed.
An original thinker. You don't just replicate trends. You come up with concepts, develop series, and experiment with new formats.
Self-directed. You can plan a shoot, show up with your equipment, capture what you need, and deliver the final content independently.
Strong storytelling instincts. You know how to find the interesting angle in an ordinary moment.
Organized. You can manage production schedules, content calendars, deadlines, and multiple projects without constant oversight.
NYC-based. You can travel throughout Brooklyn and other boroughs for shoots, events, and interviews.

Nice to Have

You've grown a social media account or built an audience of your own.
You've produced original recurring video series.
You've worked in entertainment, fashion, lifestyle, media, or other creative industries.
You've managed freelance editors, photographers, or other creators.
You have documentary filmmaking or street-interview experience.
You have experience creating content that drives measurable audience growth.
You speak more than one language.

You do not need prior nonprofit experience. We're much more interested in your creative instincts, portfolio, and ability to execute.

Contract Structure

We're open to both part-time and full-time independent contractor arrangements.

Some work can happen remotely, but you should expect to be on location regularly for filming, interviews, and event coverage.

We're looking for someone who enjoys being out in the world creating content, not someone who wants to spend all day behind a desk.

The specific scope of work, deliverables, and working arrangements will be agreed upon based on availability and experience.

About Asiyah Women’s Center

Asiyah Women’s Center is a New York-based organization providing emergency housing and comprehensive support to women and families experiencing domestic violence, homelessness, and housing insecurity.

Since 2018, we've helped thousands of women and families find safety, rebuild their lives, and access the resources they need to move forward.

Our work happens in shelters, living rooms, neighborhoods, community spaces, and across New York City. There are countless stories to tell, conversations to start, and people to bring together.

We want someone who can help us share that work with the world in a way that feels fresh, authentic, and impossible to ignore.

How to Apply

Send us:

Your resume or a brief introduction about yourself.
Your portfolio, social media accounts, or three pieces of content you're especially proud of.
Your availability (part-time or full-time).
One original content series you would launch for Asiyah. Tell us what it's called, what it would look like, and why people would want to watch.

We care more about what you can create than where you've worked.
