About the Role
We are seeking a leader to join Culture & Careers to oversee and evolve the practices, policies, systems, and tools that we employ with freelance contributors. A core goal in this role will be to ensure that our newsroom is approaching freelancers fairly, inclusively, and competitively, to enable them to perform their best work and for our newsroom staff to have clear expectations of how best to work with them. The person in this role will be the authority on our freelance policies, the driving force to push freelance strategy and operations projects forward and the liaison between senior leadership and the relevant working teams on these projects. This role will report directly to the Head of Career Mobility, Newsroom.
Responsibilities:
Newsroom-wide policies and practices: Oversee freelance policies and ensure they are applied across the newsroom, including coordinating with Standards to ensure application of journalistic standards for all freelance work at The Times. This leader will have responsibility for advancing and implementing best practices newsroom-wide, including consulting with individual departments on issues and opportunities, scaling new approaches across the wider newsroom and ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable laws.
Operations: Oversee and improve systems to ensure the newsroom operates as effectively as possible with freelancer-produced journalism, and that freelancer work supports our journalistic goals. This includes managing our internal database of freelance talent and work on other areas of journalistic workflow and systems. The person in this role would be responsible for working with our systems teams and other partners to define projects and support their implementation.
Support our systems and assist leaders across the newsroom to foster a positive experience for NYT freelancers. This includes enabling best-in-class practices for vetting freelancers, assessing their work and giving feedback, communicating with freelancers and beyond.
Basic Qualifications:
4+ years experience working on freelance operations or similar work in a journalism and / or content setting
Systems thinking skills to oversee a varying portfolio of projects and see points of connection and opportunity
Demonstrated ability to manage operations, including setting up, overseeing and improving systems, workflow and processes to increase department effectiveness
A strong analytical and planning skill set, including the ability to identify strategic issues, frame and analyze problems in a structured way, and develop and implement actionable solutions
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to both push forward projects independently and work with partners across newsroom and business functions
Experience developing trusting relationships, collaborating, and building consensus
Ability to communicate in writing and in person concisely and persuasively
Strong drive, taking the initiative to surface challenges and opportunities and develop and act on solutions

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $120,000.00 and $140,000.00.
