WHAT YOU’LL DO
The Associate Editor & Engagement Manager helps lead editorial planning and content production across print and digital platforms. Reporting to the Director of Editorial & Engagement / Editor in Chief, this position works closely with remote teams to plan, create and curate content that reflects our brand and connects with readers throughout El Paso, Teller, Pueblo and Fremont counties.
You’ll write and edit engaging stories, manage freelancers, coordinate visuals and oversee messaging across print, digital, social media and email campaigns. You’ll guide story development, maintain editorial quality and keep projects moving smoothly from concept to publication. You’ll attend community events, build relationships with readers and advertisers, and collaborate across departments to grow readership and support companywide goals in advertising, marketing and events.
This role is a growth track toward Managing Editor. This fast-paced, deadline-driven role is ideal for a curious, confident storyteller who enjoys both creative collaboration and independent problem-solving.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Editorial Leadership
- Serve as BEACON’s primary editorial contact in the Colorado Springs–Pueblo region, representing the publication at community events, expos and partner functions
- Lead local content planning and production for regional print, digital and social platforms
- Write, edit and proofread stories, features, columns and calendar listings
- Assign and manage freelance writers and photographers, ensuring accuracy, consistency and timely delivery
- Collaborate with production staff on visuals, layout direction and long-term editorial planning
- Maintain BEACON’s editorial tone, accuracy and style standards
- Build relationships with readers, advertisers and community organizations to inform coverage and strengthen BEACON’s local presence
- Partner with the sales team to identify story opportunities that support advertisers and community partners
- Contribute to event coverage, community outreach and promotional campaigns
- Stay informed on local and senior-related issues relevant to our audience
Digital Messaging & Engagement
- Write and edit content for newsletters, social media posts and email campaigns, ensuring consistency in tone and messaging
- Adapt print editorial content for use on digital channels, including the website, email and social media
REQUIREMENTS
- Degree in communications, journalism, English, marketing or related field—or equivalent professional experience
- Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with strong attention to tone and audience
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects, guide contributors and maintain editorial quality across multiple platforms
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Ability to clearly articulate goals, take initiative and confidently advocate for a strategic editorial vision
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace and social media tools
- Reliable transportation, auto insurance and a valid driver’s license
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends for events or deadlines
BONUS SKILLS
- Photography
- Adobe InDesign or Creative Suite proficiency
- Familiarity with CMS platforms and digital publishing tools
- Experience with email marketing platforms such as MailChimp
PAY RANGE: $18-$22 hourly
HOURS PER WEEK: Full Time (28-35 hours/week)
