About the Role
We’re expanding our team and looking for a News Writer to focus on St. Mary’s County. You’ll join two amazing full-time journalists who cover Charles and Calvert counties, working alongside them and our editorial team to produce high-quality, engaging local news.
You don’t have to live in St. Mary’s County — but familiarity with the area and the ability to travel there regularly are important.
What You’ll Do
- Virtually attend and cover St. Mary’s County Commissioner and Leonardtown Town Council meetings.
- Write clear, engaging, and accurate news articles that connect with local readers.
- Conduct interviews with residents, local leaders, and community organizations.
- Collaborate with the editorial team on story ideas and content planning.
- Pitch creative, community-focused stories that bring new perspectives to light.
- Meet deadlines and balance multiple projects in a dynamic newsroom environment.
- Submit at least 15 stories per week.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in writing or journalism (professional, student, or freelance experience welcome).
- Strong writing skills and familiarity with AP style.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- A collaborative spirit and ability to work independently when needed.
- Genuine interest in community news and local storytelling.
- Knowledge of St. Mary’s County and its communities (preferred).
- Photojournalism skills are a plus!
