Position Overview
The Director of Communications & Marketing (DCM) leads on all aspects of communications, marketing, press, digital content, branding, and merchandise at the Queens Museum. They work collaboratively across the Museum to strategize, plan, and implement the Museum’s public relations, marketing, digital communications, brand management and storytelling. They lead on audience development and communications strategy including marketing, social media, online content, website management while overseeing the production of marketing collateral and publications for all of the Museum’s activities.
As a member of the Directors Group and Senior Management Team, The DCM reports to the ED. They supervise the Graphic Designer, Communications Coordinator, PR consultants, freelance designers, fellows and interns. They work collaboratively with colleagues from all departments as well as with artists and community partners in order to advance dialogue and engagement. The DCM is also the Museum’s primary liaison with external contractors including public relations firms and designers.
The ideal candidate has an eye for the big picture, a thorough understanding of mission-based strategy, and has a keen ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing the departmental responsibilities, carrying out tasks in an independent and timely manner, as well as delegating when necessary.
Essential Functions
Public Relations
Develop and oversee the delivery of communications and publications strategies for the Queens Museum
Lead on the promotion of the Queens Museum’s exhibitions, programs and events as well as its overall mission, in a range of media outlets including (but not limited to) visual arts outlets locally, nationally, and internationally; local New York City media including dailies, weeklies, broadcast, and web; as well as a range of shelter, lifestyle, travel, and other outlets nationally and internationally.
Oversee and organize and attend all press visits and PR events
Monitor press inquiries. Monitor the distribution of e-mail announcements, press releases, press kits, and images
Actively cultivate new press contacts and manage relationships; oversee the upkeep of the media database
Correspond with the press and manage requests, including press-ready image requests and interviews with staff and artists.
Manage and cultivate press at exhibition openings and special events
Communications and Digital Content
Develop and lead a strategic Marketing & Communications plan to increase the museum's visibility, promote its exhibitions and programs and ensure alignment with the museum's mission and values - especially with regards to the upcoming Capital Improvement Project and expansion of the Children’s Museum
Manage the Graphic Designer, Communications Coordinator, Interns and Fellows
Oversee the Museum’s daily social media presence
Oversee the development of digital content for QM
Oversee the design and content of all marketing materials including exhibition brochures, flyers, e-newsletters, and evites
Work with all museum departments to develop marketing plans, design, and emails to communicate upcoming programs and events to target audiences
Work with photographers at museum events for promotional purposes
Maintain branding for the institution as a whole via the style guide
Lead on all internal and external signage and communications
Ensures that all content and platforms are ADA compliant and accessible.
Printed Matter, Publications and Design, Brand Management
Oversee and manage all printed matter, marketing materials and merchandise
Lead on identifying designers
Manage the website and brand identity
Sign off all merchandise and use of the QM brand
Work closely with DCAP to develop the Publication Strategy
Work with publishers to ensure QM publications are widely distributed
Manage translation as needed
Administrative
Support grant writing, collaboratively develop funding proposals, budgets and grant reporting as needed
Support board education about the Museum’s communications strategy;
Work with Deputy Director and Finance team to oversee and manage the Communications budget
Team Management
Mentor and supervise department staff, fellows and interns; work with QM leadership to identify professional development opportunities
Model exemplary workplace behavior in alignment with the QM mission and values; take proactive steps to enhance an organizational culture of learning, inclusion and cross-departmental collaboration
Contribute to the QMs Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) initiatives
Manage performance for department staff, deliver constructive feedback in an appropriate and fair manner
Strategize and determine departmental goals, set timelines and track progress in the employee database
Maintain department budget, forecast budget inputs for each fiscal year
Work closely with HR to ensure all department staff have knowledge of QM employee policies and procedures
Review and approve staff timecards for biweekly payroll processing

Language skills in addition to English desirable ASL, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic
Requirements
Expertise and significant prior experience in Public Relations, Communications, and Marketing
Proven understanding of ADA and access
Demonstrated management, budgeting, and collaborative skills
Demonstrated success and experience working and thriving in culturally diverse settings
Excellent oral and written communication skill

Hybrid Work Model
The QM team is currently practicing a hybrid work model, incorporating a blend of onsite and remote working. QM department heads require attendance onsite at the Museum for a minimum of 3 days per week, to participate in in-person meetings and project work.
