About the Role
The Athletic is looking for an energetic, motivated football data writer to work in its expanding betting vertical, on a freelance basis through May 2025, to support a commercial partnership. The right candidate will produce and use tactical analysis, data, visualisations and more to complement and tell stories around the sport. This is a national role covering professional football tactics & analytics as a whole. They will be comfortable collaborating with other writers on features and analysis pieces.

Produce weekly content analysing trends, match ups and more around Premier League matches in particular.

Understanding of programming languages (preferable experience with RStudio or Python) to analyse and visualise data.

Producing data visualisations to support other writers and guide them on how to use data and best approaches.

Work closely with the betting team to produce pieces individually and alongside other writers.

Work under tight deadline sometimes when big stories arise.

File copy in WordPress.

Maintain an understanding of subscription and engagement metrics.

High level of professionalism; driven and motivated.

Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).

High-end knowledge of European football, specifically data and tactics.

Ability to work effectively with colleagues.

Creative thinking skills.

Highlight wider tactical/stats trends so the editorial team is aware of them.

Ability to work in our central London office. Combination of office-based and remote working, with a minimum of three days per week in the office.

Flexible and understanding that the job involves some evening and weekend work.
